There's nothing we love more than a movie with an awesome fight. The best genres of film to offer this are action (obviously), sci-fi and fantasy. Some of the most classic battles would be Neo vs Smith in Matrix Revolutions, Batman vs Raze al Gule in Batman Begins and all the countless kung-fu/martial arts films. Of course, I couldn't forget giant monsters, but I already did a four part article on that nearly two years ago.
While all these are classics, and rightfully so, not many people talk about the famous fights that happen within the horror genre. Some of the most physical, brutal and action packed fights have taken place under the genre of fear and screams.
With this article, I'll list some of the most memorable fights to take place in horror. Occasionally, there will be fights that have weapons involved, while others will be without. One or two might be kinds you'll scratch your head at, but I assure you they're fights. Also, fights that are heavily involved with the use of guns won't be added.
So, let's get Punching and Gutting!

Aliens (1986)
After nearly 75 years of being frozen, Ripley returns to earth with her life gone and with her being blamed for what happened to her crew and ship. The only way to clear her name is to take a mission with a group of war hardened marines. After killing several of the alien monsters she hates so, she comes face to face with a new kind of terror, the creator of her rivals: the Alien Queen. She thinks she has escaped with Newt, Hicks and Bishop, but the Queen has stowed away. Now onboard the ship with Newt in danger, Ripley fires up a loader and confronts the mother of her most hated enemy.
I figured I'd start out with a classic. When you first saw the behemoth that was the Alien Queen, you knew it was going to be between her and Ripley, but you never would have guessed it was gonna be a close quarters fight. The loader really gives Ripley a boost of size and strength and it makes for an equal fight. No battle with an Alien, not even between the Queen and a Predator, would ever equal this as it was the women's whose life was most effected by them battling the most dangerous and intelligent one of them all.

The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)
Scientists David, Kay, Carl and their financer Mark, travel up the Amazon to learn more of a mysterious fossil that looked human but fish-like as well. However, when they get back, they find Carl's men dead and find nothing in the rocks. They head down the river to the Black Lagoon to find more bones, but instead discover a fish-like man. While David is more concerned with finding it alive and keeping it alive, Mark cares only about getting it one way or another, going so far as to shoot it with a harpoon gun. However, his desire to get it comes back to haunt him, as while diving, it grabs him and pulls him deep under water.
This one is more of a one sided fight, but Mark puts up a better fight than just about anybody else who was to be a victim to the Gill Man. Mark's greed truly gets the best of him when he tries to kill it while everyone else is more concerned with escape. When the creature grabs him, he tries his best to break free, but he's up against an animal on its home turf in the water. The fight is more or less a chase as Mark realizes that he's in the shit and tries to escape. I think I actually rooted for the creature because Mark was a dick most of the time. I would say this is my favorite scene of the film.

Battle Royal (2000)
Japan, a strict, government ran country, has decided that after thousands of youth have rebelled that they need to be kept in line via the 'Battle Royal Act.' one unlucky class is taken to a remote area (in this case an island) and forced to fight to the death til only one remains. While some panic and others try to be brave, some indulge. Mitskuo is the whore and unpopular girl of the class. Taking advantage of the game, she takes every opportunity she can and leaves bodies behind. Kiriyama however isn't part of the class at all, he joined for fun. And fun he has as the expense of several kid's lives. Eventually, he meets Mitskuo and shoots her, but after playing dead, she suddenly attacks.
As the two most evil kids in the film, you knew they were going to cross paths eventually. Granted, the fight is really short, it only lasts a real five to ten seconds and ends when Kiriyama pulls out a gun. At this point, the fights pretty much over. What makes the fight are the events that happened before it, as Kiriyama is a sadist in the purist form and Mitskuo is seducing succubus using anything she can to gain your trust then turn on you. For the majority of the fight, we think Mitskuo has the advantage with a stun gun and the cycle blade on a stick, but when she goes for the kill, Kiriyama is saved by a bullet proof vest and her fate is sealed as he knows all her weapons. My only complaint is that they could have added another few seconds.

Freddy vs Jason (2003)
Freddy misses the children that he slaughtered on Elm Street, but the town has devised a way to end his reign of terror. Seeing that he personally can't get to them, he decides to get help and finds Jason, the zombie killer of Crystal Lake. At first it works perfect, as Jason kills and the fear of Freddy grows. However, Jason can be led but not controlled, and he soon starts to take victims that Freddy wants. When he can't be rid of him, Freddy brings him into the dream world and finally confronts him. However, the battle there is brief. It isn't until later that Freddy is brought into the real world at Crystal Lake that the real fight begins.
It took them ten years to make this film after it was hinted at the end of 'Jason Goes to Hell.' Really, there are three fights: the first being in the dream world, the second when Freddy's pulled into the real world and a final one at the end. The dream battle fits perfectly into the Freddy's film series as Freddy's god when you dream, making him unstoppable. When he enters the living world, he's out of his league. What works is that both characters are kept with what made them so unique. Freddy taunts, jabs and insults his victims and uses his world to his advantage. Jason is the victim, and that serves Freddy, but he's never a hero, both because he won't relent his killing lust, and he's as unstoppable as before. I think this might be the bloodiest fight in the list.

The Lost Boys (1987)
Michael has just moved to Santa Carla with his mother and comic geek younger brother to live with his grandfather after his parent's divorce. Instantly, he takes a liking to a girl named Star who's always around the boardwalk with a boy, but both she and the boy hang out with a group of wild kids, led by David. David, though, takes a liking to Michael and brings him to their hideout. After some mind tricks, they get him to drink a red substance he thinks is wine. However, after some startling changes, it turns out to be blood. David and the gang reveal that they're full vampires, and that he, Star and the kid are all half vampires who need their first kill. After his brother and the Frog brothers kill one of the group, they raid their house, and Michael and David finally confront each other.
Even though they've flown throughout the whole movie, this is the first time we actually see the vampires fly, as before, due to budget, they used a first person view. In a way, Michael's actually fighting two battles here, one with David and one with himself as he's slowly turning into a vampire. There are a few blows, but the fight is pretty much a battle of force as both try to impale the other. The irony of the whole thing is that even though David is fighting him, killing him is the last thing he wants, as he still wants Michael in his group. The scene at the end where David's impaled is also awesome as it's shot in slow motion while the children's part of "Cry Little Sister", the theme of the movie, is played.

Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001)
France, the 1760's, a creature like no other is ravaging the countryside and killing innocents without mercy. The king has sent his loyal taxidermist Fransac, along with his native American assistant Mani, to kill it. After traveling through the rain, they arrive and prepare to figure out what is behind the attacks, taking clues and getting descriptions from witnesses. When the local military fails to succeed, a rally of bounty hunters, mercenaries and game hunters gather together for a large hunt, all believing that it's a form of wolf. Mani, noticing a girl he's taken a liking too, follows her, but she being a troublemaker gets him into a conflict with some of the hunters.
I never imagined that a foreign period piece that wasn't Asian could mix in martial arts and fit perfectly. Even more so, I never thought a Native American could be such an ass kicker in a fight. Even though Fransac and other characters have well trained fighting abilities, Mani's are the best. Here is the example: after fighting and defeating just a few men, others feel like testing him and step up, even some women. The fight isn't to the death or anything; it's actually entertaining to just about everyone around. It also will reflect on events that were to come later in the film. Really, there were a lot of other fights to choose, but this one takes it for me.

Oldboy (2003)
Dae-su is a normal South Korean businessman. He has a wife and a daughter and friends, although he's bit of a drunk and an asshole. One night though after getting out of jail and buying his daughter a pair of angel wings, he suddenly disappears. Now trapped, he's stuck in a room with a toilet, shower, bed and TV and is regularly fed. After 15 years of tattooing marks to remember the passing years, shadow boxing and trying to dig his way out, he's suddenly let go with money and clothes. Now with the help of a young woman named Mi-do, he begins his quest to find why he was taken, by eating at multiple food places until his finds the place that sells the food he ate for 15 years. Tracking the deliveryman, he discovers he was captured by a business that specializes in capture and containment, and tortures the man in charge for facts. When he leaves, the hallway is full of hired thugs.
This is easily one of the best and most amazing fights ever shot on film; I'll go on record with that. The fight pretty much is Dae-su charging in with his chosen weapon, a hammer, and fighting off the guys with wooden sticks. He's eventually stabbed and loses his hammer, but the fight turns into a fist only brawl. The real beauty of the fight is this: they made a cut out of the hallway to give it a side view and for nearly three whole minutes, the fight is done in one shot, moving from side to side. No cut away scenes, nothing. It reportedly took three days and 17 takes to shoot the scene and while the knife in his back is CGI, the result was amazing. The irony is what happens when he finishes the fight and gets to the elevator at the end of the hall. Oh, it's funny.

The Exorcist (1973)
Regan MacNeil, the eccentric daughter of famous actress Chris MacNeil, hasn't been well lately. At first, it seems to be something mental, with angry, violent and unusual behavior; they try and treat her as best they can. However, things only get worse and Chris, a borderline atheist, suddenly realizes that she might have to look to something outside of medicine. Through a friend, she turns to Father Kerras, a priest and psychologist with his own faith problems. At first he shuns the idea of possession, due to modern day knowledge of science, but as he looks at clues and facts, and after seeing Regan several times (now fully possessed), he decides to make a plea to the church. They send Father Merrin, who's had experience with this before, and both go to free the child.
This one might seem like an odd one, but rest assured, it's a fight, just not a physical one (for the most part at least). In a way, it's actually a hostage situation. The Demon has the girl and won't let her go, so it's up to these two men to battle him and release the girl. The men hit the demon with words of prayer, scripture and faith, while the Demon taunts them with heresy and displays of its powers. Eventually there are physical attacks from Pazuzu and later Kerras in a fit of rage resorts to physical violence himself, but besides that it's a battle of will, heart and soul. Literally. This might be the only time in film history when the good guys are the men wearing all black and the bad guy's a little girl. Weird, isn't it?

They Live (1988)
Nada is a drifter who goes to LA to find work and earn some money. After a co-worker, Frank, gets him food at a local soup kitchen, Nada stays the night nearby but later hears some strange sounds from the nearby church. When he investigates, he finds it's a scientific set-up which the police suddenly raid and destroy. The next day, he finds some preserved sunglasses in the wreckage and takes a pair. However, once he goes around town with them, he suddenly realizes that the glasses reveal the truth: that aliens are conquering the human race via politicians, authority figures and wealthy upper class. When they realize who he is, they chase him to a bank where a shootout begins. There, he becomes a wanted man. Eventually, he gets back to Frank, but Frank won't have anything to do with him. When Nada tries to get Frank to put on the glasses so he can show him their secret, Frank takes action.
What can I say about this one? Well, it's fucking physical, that's for damn sure. That's all I can say really. We have Nada, played by Rowdy Roddy Fucking Piper and Frank, played by the bad ass Keith David. Usually a straight up fist fight/brawl would go on for two or three minutes, this one goes on for nearly six whole minutes. There's punches, elbows, low blows, hell, even some moves from pro-wrestling. And the irony of the whole thing is that this is a fight about Nada wanting Frank to wear the sunglasses. This bloody brutal brawl is about sunglasses. I'd say the only thing that was more awesome in this movie than this fight scene was the line, "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass, and I am all out of bubblegum."
There you have it, some of the most memorable fights Horror. Really there were a few others I would have added from other films, like the Underworld films, Terminator, Predator and Vidocq, but I feel these are enough to prove my point. There's most likely a few I don't even know about.
So, next time your friends or family are talking about a film with awesome fights, recommend your style of film.
